Spirit Interview 04 - Artist <BASEMENTZEROFLOOR>’s Single
[HI] and More.
Thank you so much for agreeing to this interview!
To begin, could you briefly introduce yourselves and your band?
B-ZERO Hello, we are B-ZERO (BASEMENTZEROFLOOR), a shoegaze band based in Daegu.
Jotac I’m Jotac. I handle vocals, composition, guitar—basically a bit of everything.
Yujin I’m Yujin Jung, the vocalist and frontman of the band.
Polar I’m Polar Yun, and I play the bass and voice all the complaints.
Hyukjin I’m Hyukjin Joo, and I play the synthesizer… Hyukjin Joo, that’s me.
Seohyun I’m Seohyun Kim, the drummer.
How did you come up with the name “B-ZERO (Basement Zero Floor)”? Was there a special story behind it?
Jotac We started out in our school’s band club. The clubroom was in a space that was neither underground nor above ground—kind of in between. So at first, the name was “Basement Zero Floor.” We translated it into English and shortened it, and that became B-ZERO.
Could you tell us how the band was formed?
Yujin I gathered everyone! A TV producer approached me about joining an audition program, so I initially recruited the others as session members. That plan didn’t work out in the end, but…
Jotac Yeah, we were about to call it quits, but during a rehearsal, we tried arranging Coldplay’s “Yellow” in a shoegaze style, and the vibe was just so good. I loved that atmosphere, so I asked all five of them to stay and form a real band together.
We’re curious about the production process behind your first single, [HI], which was just released.
Jotac “HI” was the first song we wrote after establishing our concept and worldview.
We imagined waking up in a world where everyone had vanished—except for the five of us. What kind of gesture would we make when meeting each other for the first time? That’s what inspired the song.
We started working on the demo around October, and I think we finished it around November last year. It’s only now being released, but we’re excited and ready to keep going. Haha.
As a brand-new band that just released its debut single, could you give us a little teaser about your future plans or direction?
Seohyun We’re so happy to finally have a released track. We want to broaden our reach and take on more external gigs. We’re planning a show in Seoul this May, and personally, I’d love for us to perform at a festival next year.
Jotac “HI” felt like the beginning of B-ZERO, so we thought it was best to release it as a single first. We’ve got more tracks lined up that we plan to release as an album. Hopefully before the weather turns cold—please look forward to it!
Polar We’re also thinking about ways to reach people outside of music. Can’t say when, but we’re definitely exploring it.
If you were to introduce B-ZERO’s music to a friend and exaggerate a bit by saying, “It’s seriously like _____,” what would you say?
Feel free to get bold!
Jotac (Something extreme)
Hyukjin That’s more than a little exaggeration.
Polar Just a little! 살짝!
Seohyun I’d love it if people felt like they were hearing music from somewhere between a dream and reality, or between utopia and dystopia.
Polar That’s straight out of Evangelion, isn’t it?
Hyukjin Right? It does feel a bit anime. Like something between a dream and reality—Studio Ghibli or Evangelion vibes. Ethereal and fairy tale-like, but not overly cheerful. Still, it all feels beautiful in the end.
As a band—or individually—do you have any goals you hope to achieve?
Jotac I want us to succeed. I want to make a living with this band. That’s my goal.
Polar I want us to be known as a great live act. The kind of band that draws at least 200 people every time we perform.
Yujin I want to be famous! I want to gain real recognition.
Hyukjin I hope that one day, someone on the street hears our name and instantly thinks of our songs.
Seohyun I want to include one of my own songs on our upcoming album. And someday, I want us to perform on big stages like Glastonbury, Coachella, or Fuji Rock.
Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say to our readers? Feel free to say anything!
Yujin Our music is really good! Please keep an eye on us.
Polar We’d be so grateful if you followed our journey and enjoyed our music over time. We’ve got a grand narrative in the works too.
Hyukjin Going to live shows has made me realize how many hidden gems are buried underground, never seeing the light of day. Please show more love to indie music!
Seohyun We’ve got lots of unreleased songs, and I think some parts really shine more in live performances. We hope to see you at our future shows.
Jotac First of all, apologies if the members came across a bit chaotic (laughs), but B-ZERO’s journey ahead is going to be a fun one. Please keep watching!
